Who were the fathers of the Jewish people?

Answer: The fathers of the Jewish people were Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  God told Moses, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” (Ex.  3:6 NASB) The fathers demonstrated great faith in God’s promises and as a result, God dealt with Abraham, his son Isaac, his grandson Jacob and Jacob’s 12 sons who became the nucleus of the Jewish nation.

God’s dealing with Israel began with Abraham. “Now the LORD said to Abram, ‘Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you; (2) And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; (3) And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.'” (Gen. 12:1-3 NASB)

Abraham followed God’s leadings to Canaan where converted His promise into a covenant. “The LORD appeared to Abram and said, ‘To your descendants I will give this land.'” (Gen. 12:7 NASB) After Abraham followed God’s command to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice, God confirmed this covenant with an oath. “By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, (17) indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. (18) In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

God repeated the promise to Isaac in Gen. 24:2-4 (NASB) and to  Abraham’s grandson, Jacob in Gen. 28:13-15 (NASB). Following the death of Jacob, God began dealing with Jacob’s 12 sons as a group. They formed the nucleus of the Jewish people.

It was because of the faithfulness of these followers that God did not cast away Israel forever but after punishing them for their disobedience, would re-gather them and bless them under Christ’s earthly kingdom.
