Church is a translation of the Greek word ekklesia meaning a calling out or a religious congregation. Jesus called his disciples, or church, out of the world. (John 15:19) Jesus is head over everything to the church. (Eph. 1:22) The Apostle Paul describes the church as God’s household, the pillar and foundation of the truth. (1 Tim. 3:15) God’s purpose in developing the church, whose names are written in heaven, is that they might judge and bless the world in Christ’s kingdom.—Heb. 12:23; 1 Cor. 6:2; Rev. 20:4,6
