Creation

In the beginning God was alone. There was not yet any physical universe nor angelic creation. The Scriptures do not tell us how this condition existed. God began his creation with His only begotten Son Jesus being His first and only direct creation.  (John 1:14,18; 3:16,18; 1 John 4:9)

Solomon explains Jesus creation begin first in this way: “The LORD possessed me [pre-human Jesus] at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old. (23) From everlasting I was established, From the beginning, from the earliest times of the earth. (24) When there were no depths I was brought forth, When there were no springs abounding with water. (25) Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills I was brought forth; (26)While He had not yet made the earth and the fields, Nor the first dust of the world. (27) When He established the heavens, I was there, When He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep, (28) When He made firm the skies above, When the springs of the deep became fixed, (29) When He set for the sea its boundary So that the water would not transgress His command, When He marked out the foundations of the earth; (30)Then I was beside Him, as a master workman. (Prov. 8:22-30 NASB)

The apostle John adds, “He [pre-human Jesus] was in the beginning with God. (3)  All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.” (John 1:2,3 NASB) Through the work of Jesus, everything else, angelic hosts and the physical universe, were created.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Gen. 1:1 NASB) With this simple statement, the Bible tells us that God together with our Lord created the physical universe with all of its matter, energy and the physical laws which govern its operation. The universe reveals much about the wisdom and power of God. “The LORD by wisdom founded the earth, By understanding He established the heavens.” (Prov. 3:19 NASB) “Lift up your eyes on high And see who has created these stars, The One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, Not one of them is missing.” (Isa. 40:26 NASB)

Following this creation, God set aside six (6) days to prepare the earth for life and to create all of the life that inhabits the earth. While we are not told about the length of the first six (6)  days, they were longer than 24-hour days. God operates on a much longer time-scale than man. Peter explains, “But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.” (2 Peter 3:8 NASB) For more information on the creative days, please see our pages on the Creative Days and Creation of the Animals.

After creating all of the animals, at the end of the sixth day, God and our Lord created our first parents, Adam and Eve. “Then God said, ‘Let Us [God and Jesus] make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ (27)  God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (28) God blessed them; and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.'” (Gen. 1:26-28 NASB) God and our Lord had created man perfect and made him king over the earth and all its animals. When the sixth day was ended, we are told, “God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good [perfect]. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.” (Gen. 1:31 NASB) Everything God had made was perfect and so He rested on the seventh day. During the seventh day, He would turn over all of the work, particularly the work of salvation, to His son Jesus.
